Judy Hayman, HCCS-Southwest
University of Houston, B.S., M.A.

About:  Judy Hayman started her career as an elementary school teacher.  She moved to the secondary schools as a reading specialist.  Twenty years ago, she was hired by HCCS.  At HCCS, Judy has been an instructor of Reading, English, Study Skills and Education.  Not only has she taught in various area, she has also served as a director of a federally funded Student Service program, coordinator of teacher education, and department head of reading.  She is currently assistant chair of teacher education at Southwest College.  While teaching in HISD, Judy received two Outstanding Young Educator awards.  While working at HCCS, Judy has presented at national and state conferences with presentations receiving recognition awards.  In 1998, Judy was selected Teacher of the Year at Southwest College. Judy has a B.S. and M.S. in education.

Larry Mers, HCCS-Southwest

About:
Hired in 1974 as an original full-time faculty member of the Arts and Humanities Division, HCCS, Larry B. Mers has a broad educational background. He has taught at the elementary, secondary, adult education, and higher education levels, and he brings 41 years of experience to his classroom. Passionate about quality teaching, he has taught education classes for Southwest College since 1993.

Mr. Mers currently serves as Director, Telecommunications and Instructional Support for HCCS-Southwest and has held past administrative positions as Coordinator, Fine Arts, Speech, Communications and Commercial Music for the HCCS System, and Coordinator, Arts and Humanities, Southwest College prior to his current position.

In 1990, he was honored by HCCS-Central College for his work in arts education through the establishment of the endowed Larry B. Mers Performance Scholarship Fund  He is the Project Director for a TIF Grant that provides for hybrid instruction and distance learning instruction for the college and is the Southwest College representative for a Title V Grant that provides faculty training and development in new teaching methodologies and delivery systems. He also teaches distance education courses for Laredo Community College (Texas).

Kay Lynn Moran, HCCS-Northeast
University of Houston, B.S., M.Ed.

About:  A member of HCCS’ full-time faculty since 1992, Kay Lynn Moran has won numerous awards for her contributions to developmental education.  She serves as chair of Guided Studies and Teacher Education at HCCS-Northeast where she teaches education courses.  Ms. Moran has been honored as HCCS-NE Teacher of the Year and Outstanding Faculty Member.  She has also received the HCCS Chancellor’s Award of Excellence.  In 2001, while serving as Texas College Reading and Learning Association president, she acted as site chair for the Texas College Academic Support Programs (CASP) annual conference, which was hosted in Houston by HCCS.  She has also served as the CASP newsletter editor.   She has received several grants, including the Bedicek Grant and the Carl Perkins Title II Partnership of Quality Education grant.  She has also received national recognition as a recipient of the Outstanding Developmental Educator Award from the Kellogg Institute and has worked on a start-up project grant at HCCS for an Alternative Certification Program for teachers.

 

Before coming to HCCS, Ms. Moran was a public school teacher for eighteen years, teaching students in the Cy-Fair and Klein school districts at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Dr. Joan Wyde, HCCS-Central

Joan is department chair for child development and education at Houston Community College Central Campus. Before coming to HCC, she directed and taught in several child care centers in Houston. Joan co-authored the book Child Growth and Behavior: Connecting Theory and Practice and contributed a chapter to the book Room to Grow. Because she believes in the importance of teacher training, she leads conferences for teachers of young children. She is an advocate for young children and has served on several committees to improve the quality of education for young children. Joan loves cats and enjoys spending time at her vacation home in Oakbend.

Vanese Delahoussaye, HCCS-Central

McNeese State University, B.A., M.Ed.

Vanese is child development and education instructor. Before joining the HCC faculty full time, her previous work experience included teaching young children ranging in ages 1-4 in private preschool settings and classroom teaching in grades K-5 in Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. She enjoys leading conferences and training adults who are interested in teaching young children. In her spare time, she enjoys watching old movies, sewing and crafts.
